Almost 90 Railway Level Crossings Are Upgraded with New Elastic Flooring

22.06.2009

Almost 90 railway level crossings are upgraded with new elastic flooring. This was declared by the Minister of Transport Peter Mutafchiev during the inauguration of the new railway level crossing in Belozem. Four million Leva are allocated for the modernization of the railway junctions in our country. This is clear evidence for the serious policy of the Ministry of Transport and the National Company "Railway Infrastructure", Minister Mutafchiev also said.

The rehabilitation of the level crossings in the country aims to increase the safety of their usage. NC "Railway Infrastructure" undertakes activities on the replacement of old wooden made covering of the level crossings with modern elastic covering - STRAIL. The rehabilitation starts with the most loaded railway junctions of the railway network of the country.

The inauguration of the upgraded railway junction is part of the initiative of UIC and the European Level Crossing Forum. They prepare the implementation of European campaign for level crossing safety, planed for 25. June 2009. Austria, Belgium, Dania, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Ireland, Italy, Latvia, The Czech Republic, Slovakia, as well as countries outside the European Union as Israel are participating in this project. Bulgaria will also take part in the campaign.  Each of the countries will carry out its own campaign supporting the safety transition of railway level crossings and the observance of the traffic regulations.

The European day for safe level crossing transition will take place under the heading "Stop the Incidents! Europe for more safety railway level crossings!"

Minister Mutafchiev visited the railway station in Belozem and inspected the accomplished rehabilitation activities of the building and the waiting-room.
