Minister Danail Papazov: In two years Sofia's Central Railway Station is to become a modern European building

22.08.2013

In two years time Sofia's Central Railway Station will become a modern European building with a contemporary look and architecture. This was announced by the Minister of Transport, Information Technology and Communications Danail Papazov during the signing of the contracts for construction and construction control under the Rehabilitation of Sofia's Central Railway Station Project.

In his words the importance of the project is defined by the key location of the station within the European railway network, as three Pan-European corridors (namely ІV, VІІІ, VІІІ) pass through it. “Construction works will not impede the everyday passenger flow, the train traffic will not be ceased as the schedule for the construction works will be in line with the time tables”, said Minister Papazov.

Following the rehabilitation Sofia's Central Railway Station’s architecture will be completely renovated and it will comply with the requirements for energy efficiency with much more effective communication links, and people with reduced mobility will have access to all levels of the station.

The Project is co-financed by the European Fund for Regional Development (EFRD) under Operational Programme “Transport” 2007-2013 and the deadline for its implementation is the end of 2015.
