Minister Danail Papazov took part in a meeting on the development of the port of Burgas

11.03.2014

The Minister of Transport, Information Technology and Communications Danail Papazov participated in a meeting to discuss the possibilities for development of the port of Burgas. The meeting was held today at the District Administration in Burgas. It was attended by the governor of Burgas Pavel Marinov, the Mayor Dimitar Nikolov, as well as heads of State Agency Port Infrastructure, Maritime Administration and Port Burgas EAD.

The master plan of the port provides for the construction of new terminals and expansion of the existing facilities. There are works on the opening of the port to the city and the development of public access area at the expense of port terminals, which are in the center of Burgas. There is the concept of building a modern urban center of port operations-free areas, as currently a legal-financial analysis of the management of such areas is being carried out under Operational Programme "Transport".

Minister Danail Papazov said that reasonable solutions must be found for the future development of the city as well as balance between the expectations of the citizens of Burgas for "Super Burgas" and the interests of the maritime business, workers and employees at the port.

In the months to come we will be looking for alternative solutions that do not affect the functions of the port, or limit the opportunities for attracting cargo while at the same time allow the development of public areas for the benefit of citizens and visitors.

The implementation of a project financed under Operational Programme "Transport" will be completed by the end of the year. The project is to analyse the freight flows to and from Bulgarian ports and is to provide a strategy for their development. Experts from all stakeholders are to discuss the prospects for the construction of new terminals at the port of Burgas. There is also the need to analyse the socio-economic impact of the various alternatives.
