Minister Danail Papazov: We are starting the modernization of the railway station in Burgas

14.07.2014

“We are investing over 8 million levs for the modernization of the railway station in Burgas”, said the Minister of Transport, Information Technology and Communications Danail Papazov during the signing of the contracts for construction and control of the site. Within the project the visitors’ hall will be refurbished, the façade and the platforms will be renovated, modern equipment will be installed, and there will be access provided to people with reduced mobility.

The first building of the station in Burgas was built in the beginning of the 20th century and was one of the first railway stations in Bulgaria. In the period 1908-1929 the building was constructed in three stages. It is no coincidence that the station is an architectural site – it was a modern for its time project both in functionality and aesthetics. Due to almost 100 years of exploitation and the large number of people travelling the separate construction elements of the building have gotten largely depreciated. The windows are old, there is water running from the ceiling, the hydro insulation along the tracks is damaged and there is water running in the tunnel which leads to significant power losses. All this reasons the total rehabilitation of the site.

The site is part of the project “Rehabilitation of railway stations of the TEN-T network – Rehabilitation of Sofia Central Station”, “Rehabilitation of Burgas passenger station”, “Remediation of the visitors’ hall at the station in Pazardjik – 2nd stage”, which is financed under the European Regional Development Fund through OP Transport.

The contractor for the design and construction is “Burgas Railway Infrastructure” while the appropriate assessment and the construction control will be carried out by Rubikon-NR 1.

Today’s ceremony was attended by the mayor of the Municipality of Burgas Dimitar Nikolov and the Regional Governor Pavel Marinov.
