Bulgaria elected a member of the International Telecommunications Union for seventh time

27.10.2014

It is the seventh time Bulgaria has been reelected a member of the International Telecommunications Union (ITU). This happened during the Plenipotentiary Conference in Bussan, South Korea. In the next four-year period our country will participate in the higher managing body of the largest telecommunications organization to the UN from the quota for the Eastern Europe and Northern Asia and will contribute to the global development of telecommunications.

Bulgaria is among the 48 countries to decide on the part of all 193 member countries in the Union. The members of the higher managing body allocate the organization’s budget, outline priorities, propose initiatives and implement various regional projects.

In her speech at the conference the Minister of Transport, Information Technology and Communications Nikolina Anglekova said that Bulgaria has had a 134-year tradition in its relations with the Union and in this long period it has participated actively in the most important activities as well as drafting the Union’s international documents. A sign of the good cooperation between Bulgaria and ITU are the initiatives for electronic access to information and communication technologies for the visually impaired. Our country has initiated one of the most important activities of the Union for child protection in the cyber world, recalled Minister Angelkova.

In her speech Minister Angelkova also pointed out that the gender equality project, which was awarded first prize in the ITU competition, is yet another appraisal of Bulgaria’s role in the realization of successful international initiatives. The project we supported was selected among 360 nominations.

“in the eve of the 150th anniversary of the Union, the international trust we have is a great appraisal that we highly value. Through our work in the ITU Council in the next four years, we will continue to share and spread best practices for the improvement of the global digital agenda”, commented Nikolina Angelkova.
