A postage stamp depicts Tsar Samuil along with Jesus Christ, Archangel Michael and St. George

25.11.2014

Bulgarian Tsar Samuil is depicted alongside Christian protectors of valor - Jesus Christ, Archangel Michael and St. George, on a postage stamp, which was validated today.  The circulation seal was laid by the Deputy Minister of Transport, Information Technology and Communications Valery Borissov and the President of the Bulgarian Academy of Science Stefan Vodenitcharov.

The postal-philatelic edition is dedicated to the personality of one of the most remarkable Bulgarian rulers and the 1000th anniversary of the Battle at Samuil's Fortress in Belasitsa Mountain. The depiction of Tsar Samuil in a medieval icon mirrorsthe contemporary attitude to his work, said Deputy Minister Borisovat the ceremony.  He recalled that a postal-philatelic collector’s edition stamp on the occasion of the 1000th anniversary of the reign of Tsar Samuil was validated in 1997. "The topic of the Bulgarian kingsfrom the Middle Ages is one of the most popular in stamp printing. Maybe because philately, as a popular art form and type of communication, is the best way to honor a person who has made a significant contribution to the history of the Bulgarian people”, said Valery Borisov.

The circulation of the stamp is 11 000 copies. The project artist is Tetyana Uzunova.
