The Republic of Bulgaria and the Republic of North Macedonia Take Another Step Towards the Construction of the Cross-Border Railway Tunnel

At the second meeting of the Joint Committee in Skopje, the Republic of Bulgaria and the Republic of North Macedonia reaffirmed their intention to accelerate work on the facility.

Deputy Minister of Transport and Communications Tsveta Timeva once again confirmed Bulgaria’s readiness to take the lead in carrying out all procedures required under Bulgarian and European legislation for the construction of the cross-border railway tunnel.

“Our country will give the project a strong boost,” Deputy Minister Timeva stated.

She informed the North Macedonian side that Bulgaria will host a regional summit dedicated to connectivity in the first half of 2027. This will provide an opportunity to present key infrastructure projects within a broader European framework with a view to attracting investment.

For her part, Deputy Minister of Transport of the Republic of North Macedonia Kaltrina Zekolli Shaqiri expressed satisfaction with the progress achieved and the joint work undertaken.

The North Macedonian side also reaffirmed its commitment to accelerating the procedures and highlighted the support received from the European Union and financial institutions for financing the tunnel.
