Thanks to the underground connection as of today Sofia Airport will be a modern multimodal transport hub, said the Minister of Transport, information Technology and Communications Ivaylo Moskovski at the commissioning ceremony. The Prime Minister Boyko Borissov, the Minister of Environment and Waters Ivelina Vasileva, the Minister of Regional Development and Public Works Lilyana Pavlova, the Mayor of Sofia Yordanka Fandakova and the Executive Director of Metropoliten EAD Stoyan Bratoev, attended the ceremony. The new section is 5 km long and has 4 stations: Drujba, Iskarsko Shose, Sofia Sveta Gora and Sofia Airport. Now the underground in Sofia has a total of 36 km of lines and 31 stations.

“We continue to expand the underground network under Operational Program “Transport and Transport Infrastructure” 2014 – 2020, said Minister Moskovski. “Financing of the most difficult section along the line from Yanko Sakazov Blvd. to Krasno Selo residential area has already been planned. The section will provide the connection with two other lines and will service several busy areas of the city. The value of the project is 800 million levs and includes 7.2 km of new lines and 7 stations, as well as the construction of a depot in Krasno Selo and the purchase of 20 trains.

Minister Moskovski announced that this is yet another example of the success of the project for the construction of the underground in the capital city, which was financed under OPT 2007-2013. In the last programming period over 1 billion levs were provided for the expansion of the first underground line and the complete construction of the second line, said the Transport Minister. He added that these funds were used to construct 17 new stations and 18 km of lines, and at the beginning of May some 2.7 km of lines and three stations are to be commissioned.

The project for the expansion of the underground – Lot 3 has a total value of 407 million levs and some 215 millions of them have been provided under OPT 2007-2013. The project is divided into two Lots – Lot 1 that encompass the line from Tsarigradsko Shose Blvd. to Sofia Airport, and Lot 2 that encompasses the expansion to the Business Park in Mladost 3 residential area. The grant amounts to 135 million levs and is provided under OPT 2007-2013 for the completion of Lot 1.
