Over 80 per cent of global data are based on geographic information, while the sector market is estimated at more than 400 billion USD annually, announced the Minister of Transport, Information Technology and Communications, Rossen Jeliazkov, at the opening of the 20th International GIS Day.
There is no technological solution or industry that do not use geographic data, added the Minister. Their significance increases in state governance, administration, defense and security.
“GIS technologies are ever more applicable as they are not merely maps, data and models, but rather an aggregate of information subject to sharing to ensure compatibility, transparency and efficiency, especially in the domain of state governance and the work of administrations”, further added Jeliazkov. The Ministry of Transport, Information Technologies and Communications is implementing a project for the development of GIS-based electronic platform “Single Information Point”. The project is financed under Good Governance Operational Program, implemented by ESRI Bulgaria.
The project will enable collecting, sharing and processing information on the state infrastructure, be it gas transporting, electric or communication. This will speed up the development of high-speed networks, which in turn result from the application of the Act on Electronic Communication Network and Physical Infrastructure. The online platform will enable gathering at one place infrastructure information for over 500 operators. It will be accessible for organizations and citizens to improve accessibility and efficiency when using it. “The notion that data belong to the administration that collects and processes them will be a thing off the past. Information belongs to every one of us and the implementation of such projects guarantees that efforts in the past 20 years have been worth it”, concluded the Minister.
