The Struma and Ruse—Veliko Tarnovo motorways, and the Shipka tunnel, are the key road projects for achieving better connectivity along the North-South axis

A week ago we opened the first application procedures for the Transport Connectivity Programme. The investments are worth more than BGN 2.9 billion and will be directed to major road and rail infrastructure projects. This is what Transport and Communications Minister Georgi Gvozdeykov said in his speech at the Sofia Economic Forum, which is taking place today in Sofia. Minister Gvozdeykov presented the transport projects that focus on regional connectivity between Bulgaria and Greece. ‘The active work on the Sea2Sea corridor, a priority for both countries, which will connect the ports of the Aegean Sea, the Black Sea and the Danube with rail transport, continues,’ Gvozdeykov explained. He added that a team of experts has already been formed to work on the project and reciprocal actions are expected from the Greek side, which will enable the acceleration of its implementation. The aim is for part of the activities to be funded under the Connecting Europe Facility 2021—2027. ‘The completion of the Struma and Ruse—Veliko Tarnovo motorways, as well as the Shipka tunnel, are the key road projects for achieving better North-South connectivity,’ the Transport Minister stressed. Georgi Gvozdeykov also highlighted the good cooperation with the Greek business, giving the example that companies from our southern neighbour are currently implementing some of the largest infrastructure projects. ‘That is why I urge Greek companies to participate in the upcoming tenders for the new projects. Because this is another chance to ensure the most competitive selection,’ he stressed. ‘The Bulgarian state relies very much on Greece's support for the country's accession to Schengen because this will significantly help businesses on both sides of the border,’ Minister Gvozdeykov was adamant.
