Address by the Minister of Transport, Information Technology and Communications, Rossen Jeliazkov on the occasion of the World Telecommunication and Information Society Day (WTISD, 17 May 2019: „BRIDGING THE STANDARDIZATION GAP“

Dear colleagues,

Today, we celebrate 50 years since the announcement of 17 May as World Telecommunication and Information Society Day. The day is dedicated to the foundation of the International Telecommunication Union. It is one of the most prestigious agencies of the United Nations and Bulgaria is among the first countries that join it.

This year, the World Telecommunication and Information Society Day is dedicated to the standardization. General technology rules are a very important element in the digital world’s architecture. They comprise the best practices that can be applicable to every part of the world.

Standards create an environment where people can have services access regardless of the technology used. Due to the international organizations cooperation, the development of modern and widely applicable standards helps innovative and competitive products and services to be introduced as well as trade expansion to new markets. This stimulates the new technologies, applications and services deployment that is needed for the society. In recent years, creating the right conditions for the digital networks and services development is oriented to household items managing via Internet, big data, using intelligent transport systems, e-health and cybersecurity.

Dear colleagues,

Today is an occasion not only to outline the most important topics and trends in the telecommunications and the information society, but also to congratulate the thousands of Bulgarians working in the technology sector.

Happy holiday! I wish health and success to you and your families!
