In the context of a shifting global logistics landscape, Bulgaria and Turkey are establishing themselves as the countries with the greatest capacity to handle the flow of goods and passengers from the Middle East to Europe. This was discussed during a meeting between the Minister of Transport and Communications, Georgi Peev, and the Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Republic of Turkey to Bulgaria, His Excellency (H. E.) Mehmet Sait Uyanık.
The two discussed the situation regarding traffic management during the upcoming summer season, following statistics showing a record 11 million passengers and 4 million vehicles crossing the border last year. Minister Peev emphasised that pragmatic solutions must be explored to facilitate passage through the Kapitan Andreevo–Kapıkule border crossing point.
The conversation focused on the development of rail connectivity to meet growing market demand. The importance of the strategic project for a new railway link between the two countries (Yambol–Lesovo) was highlighted; this project is viewed as a priority for regional security and is part of the efforts to connect Central Asia with Europe.
The Turkish party welcomed Bulgaria’s efforts to improve infrastructure, noting that the construction of the new border crossings will attract even greater volumes of freight and provide an opportunity to increase intermodal transport in the region.
