The Concessionaire of Burgas Airport to Invest BGN 100 Million in Runway Rehabilitation

The concessionaire of Burgas Airport will invest an additional BGN 100 million in the rehabilitation of the airport’s runway. The large-scale project was launched today on the symbolic anniversary of the signing of the concession agreement between the Ministry of Transport and Communications and Fraport Twin Star Airport Management AD.

“This project is an example of a successful public–private partnership between the State, the concessionaire and the local authorities, leading to modernisation, safety and sustainable development,” said Deputy Minister of Transport and Communications Angel Zaburtov during the groundbreaking ceremony. He noted that the runway had been repaired only once – in 1980 – and that, after more than 40 years of operation, it had reached the end of its service life.

“Over the 19 years since the start of the concession of the airports in Burgas and Varna, the concessionaire has invested more than BGN 400 million in infrastructure development and has paid over BGN 400 million in concession fees,” said Deputy Minister Zaburtov.

From his side, Michael Reusch, Chief Executive Officer of Fraport Twin Star Airport Management AD, emphasised that this BGN 100 million investment is strategic for the future of Burgas Airport and the region. “Investing today means laying the foundations for the opportunities of tomorrow,” he stated.“

The project includes the reconstruction of the 3,200-metre runway, a modern lighting and drainage system, and a complete upgrade of the safety zones. The rehabilitation works are being carried out by the Bulgarian company Stimex EOOD, alongside parallel renovation works on the apron areas. During the construction period, the airport will be temporarily closed to air traffic, and regular operations are expected to resume at the start of the summer season.

The official ceremony was attended by representatives of State institutions, local authorities and business partners, including Vladimir Krumov, Regional Governor of Burgas; Stanimir Apostolov, Deputy Mayor of Burgas Municipality; Ivan Alexiev, Mayor of Pomorie Municipality; Holger Schäfers, Head of International Operations at Fraport AG; Denitsa Weissmantel, Chair of the Supervisory Board of Fraport Twin Star Airport Management AD; and Hristo Todorov, Member of the Supervisory Board.
