Construction of electric charging stations begins at 35 railway stations across the country

Construction of electric charging stations begins at 35 railway stations across the country. Their implementation will ensure the free movement of passengers and cargo and will accelerate the transition towards clean, lower-emission transport. Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Transport and Communications Grozdan Karadzhov said during the signing of a Memorandum of Cooperation and Interaction between the National Railway Infrastructure Company, Electricity System Operator EAD and ECO Charge EAD.

The purpose of the cooperation between the three companies is to provide unrestricted charging access for public and private electric vehicles. The first stage envisages the construction of fast-charging stations in 35 railway stations in major regional cities and in key directions such as the Europe Motorway and the Struma Motorway. In the long term, the network will cover all 249 electrified stations in Bulgaria. The charging infrastructure will use the existing electrified NRIC network, which will ensure high reliability and a low final charging cost. The first station is expected to be put into operation in Sofia within four months.

“The choice of railway stations as locations for charging stations is not accidental – they are a natural point of intersection between rail and road transport,” Karadzhov said, explaining that the charging infrastructure marks the beginning of a new model in which public transport becomes the basis for movement, and electric cars will be used from home to the railway station and vice versa. “This is the true representation of modern sustainable mobility – integrated, accessible and clean,” he emphasized.

The event was attended by the Minister of Energy Zhecho Stankov and representatives of the National Railway Infrastructure Company, Electricity System Operator EAD and ECO Charge EAD.
