Digitalisation, the deployment of intelligent transport solutions and the modernisation of port infrastructure are among the key priorities for unlocking the full potential of waterborne transport along the Danube River and the Black Sea. This was stated by Deputy Minister of Transport and Communications Anna Natova, who joined online the opening of the round table “Danube and the Black Sea: Synergy for Regional Development and Connectivity”.
The event is taking place today in the city of Ruse as part of the Bulgarian Presidency of the Common Maritime Agenda for the Black Sea initiative and within the framework of the EU Strategy for the Danube Region.
In her address, Deputy Minister Natova emphasised the strategic importance of regional connectivity. “The Danube River and the Black Sea form a strategic artery linking the heart of Europe with global maritime trade routes. During Bulgaria's Presidency, we are focusing on streamlining administrative procedures, strengthening regional integration and improving multimodal connectivity,” she said.
According to the Deputy Minister, the transition to integrated management requires the modernisation of ports, transforming them into efficient multimodal hubs. She also highlighted the successful cross-border projects RIS Corridor Management (COMEX2) and FAIRway Danube II, which enhance navigational safety and reduce carbon emissions through data exchange.
“Sustainable regional development is impossible without a healthy environment. By introducing environmentally friendly technologies and protecting river and marine ecosystems, we are ensuring the sustainable development of the region,” she added.
As part of the forum, participants will visit the River Information Services (RIS) Centre in Ruse, where they will see first-hand the digital systems used to manage vessel traffic and enhance navigational safety on the Danube River.
