Deputy Minister Nanov: The Only Railway Tunnel on the Plovdiv–Burgas Line Has Been Excavated

The only railway tunnel on the Plovdiv–Burgas line has been successfully excavated. This was announced during a visit by Deputy Minister of Transport and Communications Lyuben Nanov, who inspected on site the progress of the modernisation works along the Orizovo – Mikhaylovo railway section. The site is part of the large-scale project for the rehabilitation of the Plovdiv–Burgas railway line. The “Chirpan” Tunnel, which is 744 metres long, is one of the most technically complex structures along the entire route. It provides a direct connection bypassing Chirpan Station and diverts transit traffic away from the town.

“The Chirpan Tunnel represents a major step forward in the modernisation of Bulgaria’s railway infrastructure. It will ensure higher traffic capacity and allow trains to travel at speeds of up to 160 km/h,” said Deputy Minister Nanov. He added that the completion and commissioning of the facility are expected by the end of 2026, when significantly faster and safer travel between Orizovo and Mikhaylovo will be achieved.

The modernisation of the Orizovo – Mikhaylovo railway section is valued at BGN 282 million, financed under the Transport Connectivity Programme“.
