The deputy prime minister Grozdan Karadjov signed contracts worth almost half a billion leva for digital connectivity in distant regions

We will no longer speak of digital nomadism, but of the opportunities that will arise not only to  for residents of sparsely populated areas, but also for future businesses that will develop their potential there. This was stated by Prime Minister Rosen Zhelyazkov during the signing ceremony of six contracts worth over BGN 443 million for the construction of digital networks across the country. "This is an significant step towards the digital transition. I would even call it a digital campaign into underpopulated areas - thosewith no market potential," the Prime Minister noted.

The Prime Minister emphasised that the project will not only provide users with access to high-speed internet, but also enable a new approach to regional policy, which in turn could support better demographic outcomes. "This project will be implemented within an exceptionally short timeframe, the necessary digital infrastructure will be built, and the subsequent regulatory process will ensure that all telecommunications operators have access to deliver a diverse range of digital services," Zhelyazkov explained.

"The total investment in the project is nearly half a billion leva," said Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Transport and Communications Grozdan Karadjov during the ceremony. He added that the operators will contribute 10% in co-financing. "This is a strong example of both a public-private partnership between the state and the operators, as well as as a demonstration of their social responsibility. Over 7000 km of optical network must be developed in just over a year. The Ministry of Transport and Communications, together with the Communications Regulation Commission, will exercise strict oversight to ensure high-speed internet is built on time at every designated point," the Deputy Prime Minister stressed .

Grozdan Karadjov stated that the project envisages internet speeds more than 100 times faster than those currently available. "Business development in remote regions will be on par with investments currently seen around major cities. Education, as a key government priority, will also benefit from daily access to high-speed internet," Deputy Prime Minister added. He reminded that the Ministry urgently prepared and passed legislation enabling new opportunities and shortened deadlines for the construction of networks linked to base stations. They will provide uninterrupted internet service, even during power outages. "Previously, only the permits for this equipment would have taken up to two years. Now, the optical network is being built in areas where permits are not required, and construction in the remaining sections will begin by the end of summer," Grozdan Karadjov concluded.

During the ceremony six contracts for the development of digital networks in the country were signed with the selected contractors: "A1 Bulgaria" EAD, "Vivacom Bulgaria" EAD and "CETIN Bulgaria" EAD (part of the "Yettel Bulgaria" Group). The total value of the activities is BGN 433,613,866 excluding VAT, of which BGN 390,027,846 excluding VAT is financed under the National Recovery and Resilience Plan.
