Deputy Prime Minister Karadzhov: One of the new bridges over the Danube should be near Silistra

The construction of a bridge over the Danube at Silistra is of strategic importance for Bulgaria and the region. Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Transport and Communications Grozdan Karadzhov stated this during meetings with the Mayor of Silistra Alexander Sabanov and the Regional Governor Iliyan Velikov.

The Minister emphasized that such a facility would be a natural extension of key transport links to Moldova and Ukraine and would be important for both European security and for the economic development of the region. “This is a strategic point – a key element of the North-South transport corridor, which is a priority not only for Bulgaria, but for the entire European Union,” Karadzhov pointed out.

He noted that so far there has been no constructive response from the Romanian side on the matter regarding the new bridge structures over the Danube. “We are ready to make efforts and provide the necessary funding, but without the willingness on the part of Romania, this process cannot happen. If we do not find a mechanism at EC level to stimulate the construction of new bridges between Bulgaria and Romania, it will be difficult to talk about real European connectivity,” the Deputy Prime Minister emphasized.

Karadzhov also discussed with the Mayor of Silistra the project for a new bypass road which will take heavy traffic out of the city. “With this project, we will solve a long-standing problem for the people of Silistra. The safety and tranquillity of the people are a priority, and the state is ready to provide funding and resources for the construction of the section. It will be part of the broader strategy for modernizing the infrastructure along the Danube,” the minister added.

During his visit to Silistra, the Deputy Prime Minister also visited the post office, the railway station, the port and ferry terminals. The Silistra Ferry Terminal is currently being prepared for a concession analysis and immediately after its completion, the concession procedure will be announced.
