We support the initiative to build an intermodal hub with terminals in Plovdiv, Burgas and Sofia, which will connect our country with Italy. This was stated by Deputy Minister of Transport and Communications, Dimitar Nedyalkov, during the international conference "Major Infrastructure Projects for a United Europe", held today in Burgas.
"The project fully aligns with our vision for sustainable and efficient freight transport. By combining road, rail, water and air transport, we will achieve faster, more reliable and more environmentally friendly movement of goods," emphasised Deputy Minister Nedyalkov.
He noted that Bulgaria is consistently developing its intermodal infrastructure. The terminal in Plovdiv, which has been operational since 2018, is currently functioning beyond its design capacity. In Sofia, construction has already begun on the multimodal logistics platform “Sofia – West” in the Voluyak area, funded under the Connecting Europe Facility. In Burgas, a large-scale project for modernising the port infrastructure has been completed through a successful public-private partnership.
"In March, we launched a programme worth 34.5 million leva to support intermodal operators. The funds will be used to modernise existing terminals, purchase zero-emission handling equipment and implement modern IT solutions," Nedyalkov added. The deadline for submitting project proposals is 26 September 2025.
The conference in Burgas is organised by Confindustria Bulgaria – the Association of Italian Industry in our country – in partnership with Burgas Municipality. During the forum, a project for the construction of an intermodal hub was presented to businesses and institutions, aimed at improving transport connectivity between Bulgaria and Italy.
