European Funding Approved for the Construction of the Ruse Intermodal Terminal

Upon completion, the terminal will be entrusted to a private operator for management

European funding has been approved for the construction of an intermodal terminal in Ruse, the Ministry of Transport and Communications announced. The total value of the project amounts to nearly BGN 117 million. The investment will be implemented under the Transport Connectivity Programme 2021 – 2027, with non-repayable funding of over BGN 97 million provided by the European Regional Development Fund.

The intermodal terminal will be constructed on the site of the former Ruse East Marshalling Yard. The project envisages the construction of a new railway station with seven tracks, the restoration of the rail connection to the Danube Bridge, as well as the development of a new road access route from the city’s Northern Industrial Zone.

The terminal will include administrative buildings, a cargo handling area, a customs checkpoint, warehouse facilities, parking areas and landscaped green spaces.

“With the construction of the third bridge over the Danube, which will also be located near Ruse, and the development of the intermodal terminal, the city is establishing itself as a key transport hub for north – eastern Bulgaria. Combined with the modernisation and capacity increase of the Ruse – Varna railway line, this will provide the most direct rail connection for freight flows from the East and the Black Sea region along the Danube to Western and Central Europe,” said Grozdan Karadjov, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Transport and Communications.

The National Railway Infrastructure Company is expected to launch a public procurement procedure for the design and construction of the intermodal terminal in January 2026. Following completion, the operation of the facility will be entrusted to a private operator.
