“Technological progress and innovation in the sector must develop within a framework of clear rules and guaranteed safety.” This was stated by Minister of Transport and Communications Georgi Peev, who took part in the informal meeting of European Union transport ministers in Dublin on 21 September 2026. During the meeting, the transport ministers discussed digitalisation, road safety and measures to address the consequences of the fuel crisis.
During the discussions on innovation and road safety, Minister Peev highlighted the significant potential of connected and automated vehicles (CAVs). He emphasised that Bulgaria supports the development of a common “Single System” approach within the EU, but that technologies must be deployed gradually and responsibly, and only when their safety has been demonstrated. With regard to the future oversight of new technologies, the Minister proposed discussing the establishment of a specialised European agency to coordinate these processes and adapt the legislation accordingly.
During the debates on the energy shock and its impact on the sector, Minister Georgi Peev noted that Bulgaria supports an approach based on coordinated measures within the EU, which would help preserve European transport connectivity and maintain the competitiveness of European transport operators on the international market.
During the discussion on the green transition, the Bulgarian Transport Minister emphasised that large-scale investment in clean technologies and the decarbonisation of transport would lead to a reduction in external energy dependencies. This is a step that today is directly a matter of security, he added.
