Minister Moskovski inspects the oil spill containment near at Sozopol

The minister of Transport, Information Technology and Communications, Ivaylo Moskovski, inspected the area of the oil spill near the town of Sozopol. The team onboard of EA Maritime Administration’s cutter monitored the measures to contain the oil spill and discussed further measures.

“There is an established procedure that we follow in case of emergency, which will incur additional expenses, yet we have the Prime Minister’s assurance that the necessary resources will be ensured,” commented Ivaylo Moskovski. It was firmly decided yesterday that the oil from the underwater vessel “Mopang” would be drained. The ship that sunk in 1921 is the source of the oil pollution. Representatives of two companies that have the necessary equipment are expected to inspect the place today.

The Executive Director of EA "Maritime Administration", Cap. Zhivko Petrov, said that a similar operation was carried out in Bulgaria, but with different parameters. He informed Minister Moskovski that 500 meters of containment booms have already been deployed to prevent the spill and some other 500 meters will be placed today. In this way, the spill will be completely contained. Later in the day, divers will dive about 25 meters in depth to attach floating barriers to the sunken ship, so as to keep the vessel intact until the fuel is drained.
