“Bulgaria shares a common vision with the Transport Community for the development of the Western Balkans,” said the Minister of Transport and Communications, Georgi Peev, during a working meeting with the Director of the organisation’s Permanent Secretariat, Talis Linkaits.
During the talks, which were also attended by Deputy Minister Hristina Velinova and the Secretariat’s Director for Project Preparation and Financing, Tatjana Stieglitz, Linkaits described Bulgaria as a trusted partner and expressed readiness to deepen joint activities.
The Head of the Secretariat praised Bulgaria’s commitment to the project for the cross-border railway tunnel with the Republic of North Macedonia. The facility is a key section of Corridor VIII, which connects the Black Sea and the Adriatic Sea and is a natural extension of the global transport arteries between Europe and Asia.
Minister Peev and Talis Linkaits also reviewed progress on the modernisation of the railway line between Niš and Dimitrovgrad, highlighting the key importance of cross-border cooperation for the successful completion of the route.
Minister Peev presented the measures taken and the existing challenges in easing traffic through the Kapitan Andreevo – Kapıkule Border Crossing Point on the border with Türkiye. He called for a unified position on introducing exemptions for professional drivers from the Schengen rule of a stay of up to 90 days in any 180-day period for third-country nationals.
