Opportunities for the restoration and development of Ruse Airport were discussed during a working meeting at the Ministry of Transport and Communications (MTC). The meeting was attended by Minister of Transport and Communications Georgi Peev, Deputy Minister Hristina Velinova and Mayor of Ruse Municipality Pencho Milkov.
The parties agreed on an approach based on minimum investment and maximum impact. The existing infrastructure and buildings owned by the municipal company that operated the airport allow commercial flights to be launched without unnecessary expenditure. Passenger traffic in the initial phase is expected to reach up to 70,000–80,000 passengers per year.
The procedural requirements were also discussed, with the participants noting that domestic and Schengen flights are easier to operate than services to destinations outside the Schengen Area, which require additional border and customs controls.
The Ministry of Transport and Communications and Ruse Municipality will organise an expert meeting on the restoration of the airport by the end of October, with the participation of air operators, to discuss specific actions. The local authorities regard the project as strategically important for the development of the region and the retention of its population.
The discussions also covered opportunities for the development of the Danube transport corridor. Particular emphasis was placed on maintaining sustainable navigation through effective dredging operations, ferry connections, the operation of port infrastructure and the full utilisation of the Danube as a strategic European artery for trade and tourism.
