The Lozarevo Tunnel is built under strict quality and safety control. The excavation is carried out on both sides of the tunnel, and until their final connection remains 90 meters in an area with complex geological conditions. Deputy Minister of Transport and Communications Murad Turk said during an on-site inspection of the progress of the construction of the railway tunnel, part of the Karnobat-Sindel railway line. The Director General of the National Railway Infrastructure Company Yordan Varbanov also participated in the inspection.
DeputyMinister Turk stressed that the site is very important for better connectivity between North eastern and South eastern Bulgaria, ensuring strict compliance with all design and technical requirements and standards.
During the inspection, a review was made of the current condition of the site, the measures taken to strengthen the complex terrain and the progress of the construction activities. The representatives of the contractor and the construction supervision presented information on the challenges and the upcoming stages, as well as on the measures to minimize the risks associated with the complex geological conditions.
The Lozarevo Tunnel is the longest two-way railway tunnel in the Balkans, with a total length of 2,774 m. Its construction began in 1987 by the Troops of the Ministry of Transport, when nearly half of the projected length was built when excavated on both sides. Over the years, activities for the construction of the tunnel facility have been repeatedly suspended due to a lack of funding, and in 2024 they were resumed.
