A series of postage stamps depicts four of the most significant surviving artifacts from Thracian treasures. The issue was released for use by the Minister of Transport and Communications Korman Ismailov, the Director of the National Archaeological Museum Assoc. Prof. Dr. Hristo Popov, and the project’s artist Tahsin Ahmed.
“This is a sort of encyclopedia in miniature, a tiny narrative of one of the most impressive periods in the history of our lands. Thracian civilization, with its sophisticated material culture and spiritual depth, will come to life and reach Bulgarian citizens at home and abroad with every letter or postcard,” Minister Ismailov said during the ceremony.
The stamps depict the Mask of Teres, the golden ring from Ezerovo, a diadem from Sveshtari, and a breastplate from Mezek.
“With the development of thematic philately since the late 1950s, postage stamps related to the Thracian historical heritage have enjoyed great collector interest. A case in point is the last issue from 2016, which was on the theme of ‘Ancient Thracian Coins’,” the Minister recalled.
The “Thracian Gold” series combines the first Bulgarian stamps with a variable print run that are priced in Euro. They will be used for postal correspondence for years to come. Specifically for collectors, a souvenir sheet of the four stamps was also released in a limited edition of 1,000 copies.
